Part 3 -Rico LeBrun’s guides

- I’ve posted the first two installments of Rico LeBrun’s guide to drawing the deer. This will complete the booklet that was prepared exclusively for the Disney artists working on Bambi where LeBrun taught classes in animal anatomy.

Sky David was kind enough to have copied these for me and I certainly couldn’t resist sharing this book with you.

Here’s part I.
Here’s part II.

This reminds me of when animator Lee J. Ames came to my grammer school to lecture in 1982, and he told us that he and some other Disney artists fed ciggerettes to some rabbits they were sketching during Bambi. One of the rabbits died and he felt really bad about it. I never forgot that story! Maybe it was because Lee was the first animator I ever met. AND he looked like Geppetto!

I once had a conversation with Joe Grant at Disney’s about how the media occasionally declares one artist of the past more in vogue than another. This was when there were all these books being published about N.C. Wyeth’s work, but nothing about Howard Pyle, his teacher and inspiration. Andrew Loomis was hot for a long time, now hardly mentioned. Joe Grant added there should be more written about Rico LeBrun, who’s work was very popular back then.

thank you very much for these interesting anatomy drawings, which are quite unusual ! I don’t know if I will have to animate one day a deer but who knows ! If by any chance you would have the same kind of study about horse anatomy i would be deeply interested ! Thanks for your blog, which is well documented and instructive.

Hello Michael, thanks for all the great work you put into this blog, it’s a daily read. Just a note to let you know that the 34jpeg link is to page 25 of the LeBrun book, not page 33, it’s the only one missing. Thanks again.

These are great! I’d have made a terrible naturalist because if I’d only seen the skeletons of these deer, and had never seen a live one, I’d have concluded that the creature had great difficulty in walking.

Amazing of you to share these with us Michael. I had seen some of these when I worked at Disney, but never the whole series. Thank you!
