Bedtime for Robert – 2
- Today we continue with this magnificent, yet unpublished, book that was written by Bill Peckmann and illustrated by the late, great Rowland B. Wilson. The book almost reads like a dialogue-less storyboard.
Posted the way it is, the piece moves with all the speed of fast paced cartoon of the forties, and is drawn and composed with as much grace.
This is a treat to post, and I thank Bill Peckmann for the chance to do so. You can see Part 1 here.

Part of the intrigue is imagining the atmosphere and lighting, which is indicated par excellence in the drawings–from the spookiness of the cemetery and the creepy church interior, to the inviting warmth of the fire station in a rainstorm, to the (Hopper-esque?) urban street scenes of theater and shops-by-night, to the dairy trucks beginning their deliveries in moonlight, to the harsh artificial illumination of the toll booths.
Is it true that–cats–have the most fun?

Wow, Bill and Rowland had a gem of a story on their hands. I’m sad that this never got published (much less completed). It might have become a childhood favorite of mine.
