Melody Board 1 – pt.1

- John Canemaker has loaned me two storyboards for the Disney film, Melody: Adventures in Music. The second is a very different version of the first. I don’t know who did the drawings for this board, but the images are very finished looking. There’s also not much to hint that this version was to be done in 3D.

John also gave me a lot of color sketches and models from this board. Some of those will follow later this week.

As in the past, I’ve posted these by showing the full board, then by breaking it up into columns. This allows me to show off the boards at the largest I can get it. So here are the first two of four boards from the first version of the storyboard:

And here are these two boards broken down:

Fascinating stuff! Thanks Mike and John for sharing. I don’t believe that Ward Kimball was involved with the first versions of either Melody or Toot Whistle. There’s a set of Toot Whistle boards that are similarly drab and old school. I think Ward was brought onto the projects after Walt saw how cheesy the original treatment and visual direction was for these shorts. Walt Disney probably saw it as an opportunity to experiment too since they were initially being done on a small budget as shorts intended for school distribution and not theatrical release.

Very nice! The human in the straw hat looks like the characters in Kurtzman’s “Hey, Look!”

Wow, these are great, Mike. Big thanks to you and John for sharing these with us! Can’t wait to see the rest….(and thanks for the linkage to my blog about this film).

    Amid makes a good point.

This stuff is so different from the boards I saw in Kimball’s unit back in the fifties. I believe Ward brought in designer Tom Oreb to redesign a lot of stuff.

    Fascinating work in any case.
