Mickey the Tailor

Bill Peckmann recently sent me another stash of model sheets, especially of Mickey, Donald and Goofy. Among them were four pages of Mickey from The Brave Little Tailor. This film, of course, is a gem, and I can’t help but admire the drawing on these model sheets.

Two of them are clippings from animation by Fred Moore. There are some clues as to the exposing of the scene, so I took the drawings apart and ran them through AfterEffects just for my own entertainment. Here are the results, below. First all four model sheets; then the QT movie I made of the actions.

The best Mickey of them all, the fluidity and boyishness Moores tweaking brought to the Mouse is pure brilliance, anyone have a call sheet, or good enough, to figure out who did what?

Mark Mayerson offers a breakdown of all animators in his mosaic courtesy of the drafts from Hans Perk.

Such an amazing Mickey: such fluid animation and amazing poses for this character. Gotta sit down one of these days and watch a bunch of old Disney shorts. If I remember correctly, Disney never aired them when I was younger…

I saw the drafts for this back in 81 when I was researching my Fred Moore article, and still have the notes where I wrote the dial for this bit to remind me what parts Fred did.
Frank Thomas did a fantastic job with a lot of Mickey’s prime scenes as I recall, but this walk-away–to go battle the giant with Mickey’s “I hope” change of mien–is so (I can’t help it, have to use that old chestnut)appealing. What a master.
