Kelly’s 3 Caballeros

- Suppose we had a comic book version of The 3 Caballeros; wouldn’t that be fun to see? What if the artwork were done completely by Walt Kelly; would that make it a treasure? I think it does. Bill Peckmann made my week when he sent me the scans to the following comic book. As Bill wrote to me: “Beautiful stuff, like Barks’ art, it’s timeless, looks like it was done yesterday.”

Not only is the artwork out of this world, but the quality of the printing is brilliant. And the quality of the book, itself, is wonderfully well preserved. You only have to look below to read it. Take your time; this is great.

    Q. The copyright on that appears to be 1993. Do you know the original publication date for this?

The original publication date was 4/45. It was #71 of Dell’s Four Color Comics, Series 2.

My only beef with Gladstone Disney comics are those doggone gradients. They just don’t look right.

This particular reprint is from the period when Disney held the license in 1993.

Carl Buettner wrote and drew a Three Caballeros short story which I posted years ago here.

WOW!! Thanks so much for printing this! Kelly’s art is so “clean” — perfect shapes and composition without a lot of fussiness. Now, if someone would only print his version of “Pinocchio” in its original form! Makes me sorry that Kelly didn’t do more versions of Disney films. I would love to see what he would have done with “Dumbo” and “Cinderella.” Still, we have to be grateful for what we have.
    This is just gorgeous!!

I had this book in my youth. Is there any way to get a copy of it today?
