Even More UPA Spots

- Here are more Layouts and character poses for the commercial work done at UPA. They are all pulled from Vince Cafarelli‘s collection of artwork. I assume these all come from UPA since Magoo models were in the same folder. The design styles are consistent with what we’ve seen from UPA at the time.

An ad that features Romeo and . . .

. . . Juliet

6
Cleopatra was obviously cut out of the spot.
Note that the pegs were cut off the NG drawing.

7
Napoleon, but it looks like it comes from a different spot.

8
Was this something that stuck in Gene Deitch’s mind before he left
UPA to go on to run Terrytoons? Shades of Gaston le Crayon.

Obviously, an ad for Mueller pasta

An interesting series of Layouts. I’m not sure if they’re for an ad . . .

. . . or a short film for the McBoing Boing Show.

The painter model sheet would appear to be the work of Fred Crippen, who worked at UPA-NY before heading to LA. Jimmy Murakami had a nearly identical style during this period, but he only worked at UPA-LA, so I think Crippen would be the best guess.

Thanks for the great post! Pictures 4 to 7 are from a series of Aqua Velva commercials, depicting great couples from story and literature. The little guy on picture 4 and 5 is not Romeo, but an “Aqua Velva man” who makes Juliet jump from the balcony, leaving Romeo. I have this ad on film and the character design is great! The best of the series is the ad with Napoleon (pic 7) and Josephine. It can be watched on YouTube.

Just to correct a wrong word on my comment: I meant “great couples from History”. Sorry about my English.

#9 is Rusty from their “Danny Thomas Show” title package.
