Charming!

What’s happened? Is Joanna Quinn no longer doing these spots? This is ugly and unfortunate and criminal! Here’s an ad agency without any real taste. MoCap is going to kill me; I know it.

    Now that’s a crappy ad.

What lame brain thought this “new look” was better than the J.Quinn
    bears?

Also, it automatically loses points in my book for the cliche, arbitrary use of Handel’s “Hallelujah” chorus from The Messiah to signify great rejoicing over the supposed amazing new benefits of some consumer product.
Yeah, the angels in heaven are rejoicing now that we have this great new product on the shelves…. gag me.

(was the bit even all that funny the first time it was done , oh, probably back in the 60′s ? It’s been done hundreds of times since and is about the most cliche choice in music cues they could have made. )

Horrendous as it indeed is, this TV spot can’t be accused of not doing what it’s meant to do. After watching it, I feel a desperate urge to stock up on Charmin. Uh oh, ‘scuse me…gotta run…..

First I thought this is mo-cap. Then viewing again it doesn’t even look that ‘sophisticated’. Someone shot the live footage and just covered it up with 3D graphics – basically the same method used to produce the White Cloud commercials back in the 80′s.

I was lucky to hear Joanna Quinn speak at the Ottawa animation festival a few weeks ago and she even brought some of her amazing drawings from her films. Someone asked if she was still doing the 3D Charmin ads, to which she replied Charmin decided to ‘update their look’ and no, she was not involved. Until a few days ago I was lucky in not witnessing the horror of the new ads with my own eyes. What were they thinking?
