Retreads: Mickey Models

- These are the four models for The Little Whirlwind. They were drawn by Freddie Moore. I’d posted one of them in the past and was asked if I had the rest of them, so it doesn’t hurt to post them again. They were xeroxed copies of copies, and they’ve faded over the years. I had to do some reconstruction and work to get them presentable.

Mark Mayerson posted all four on his blog back in June/2006, and he did a mosaic of the film then, as well. Hans Perk posted the drafts on his site, also in June/2006.

The cartoon is on the Mickey Mouse In Living Color (Vol.2) dvd.

The way Mickey looked in “The Little Whirlwind” and the other shorts Riley Thompson directed in 1941/1942 is my favourite design of all. I think that’s the way they should have let the character remain, as it just has so much personality and appeal in the shapes and arrangement of the various elements. He’s definitely more fun to draw like that too!

That last sheet is the one that was registered for the trademark on Mickey Mouse. Les Clark put it together. We have that model sheet pinned up on Clark’s desk from the Hyperion studio on display at the ASIFA-Hollywood Archive, along with Clark’s original drawing for the Hyperion sign.

    See ya

Many of the images found on the last sheet also made their way onto 1930s merchandise.

Thanks for the info on the last sheet. I love it. My favorite Mickey is just a bit earlier than this, but this is a beauty. He’s never looked better.
