Paul Julian’s Swamp Women titles

- The last post to focus on Paul Julian’s work, pulled images from the credit sequence to Roger Corman‘s film, The Terror. Corman used Julian for a number of title sequences, and I hope to showcase several of them here.

However, the print selection is not the best. In this post taking frame grabs from Swamp Women, the print includes an obviously added on title card using B&W footage. The color film that follows is so deteriorated and choppy, in this print, that it’s hard to discern what color the original art was. So I’ve tempered it a bit to get rid of the magenta look. I suspect I’m getting close.

The imagery is definitely Julian’s. He had an obvious Ben Shahn influence to some of the work although he gets a bit more surreal in his compositions and designs.

There are fewer camera moves in this title. I’m sure the budget was low. I wouldn’t be surprised if it were in the hundreds (not thousands) of dollars.

This first title on the rented DVD looks like it was pulled from a B&W print.

Fascinating! And the Julian backgrounds for “The Terror” were terrific! Many thanks for putting these up!

Thank’s for the posting, I always suspect that this was Julian’s work. When I was searching titles in 50s and 60s for an PHD thesis about the film work of the designer Saul Bass, I found many great titles sequences in Roger Corman productions, and I was pretty amazed, because I found that Paul Julian at the same time as Saul Bass, was also putting the modern graphic idiom on film titles. Of course the budget was much more low, but his work was very atmospheric, making good use of limited animation with impressionistic and expressionistic designs, adding value to this productions. He also did a great job in the titles of “Not of This Earth”, “Attack of the crab monsters” and “Dementia 13″, all produced by Corman. I think he was also responsible for the titles from “Teenage doll” and “The beast with a million eyes”. Do you know if he was involved with this productions? (Fernando – from Brazil)

Thank you for collecting these titles. I love his work but never knew his name. His style is distinct and added to the noire genre.
