RBW – color Istanbul & more

Rowland B. Wilson‘s Istanbul Express appears in his book The Whites of Their Eyes which was published by Dutton in 1962. However it’s in B&W and appears relatively small size. Hard to read. Denis Wheary, a first rate collector and authority on Rowland B. Wilson’s work, has kindly photographed the original Esquire publication in color and has sent these photos to me. Using some heavy photoshop work, I was able to clean up the photos to a very presentable shape. Here are the four pages.

Here’s a color cartoon right out of Playboy courtesy of Bill Peckmann.

Also from Bill Peckmann’s outstanding collection of Rowland Wilson art is this flyer Rowland designed to promote himself.

Here are a pair of Consumer Reports covers done by RBW.

Just when I thought I had seen each and every Rowland B. Wilson illustration–some new ones surface. This whole series is like a treasure hunt!

It’s really interesting to see art from different “phases”. There are variations, yet the style shows through. All the postings taken together give a fabulous overview–truly comprehensive.

Big Thank-you’s to Denis Wheary and Bill Peckmann for preserving and sharing this art and demonstrating that it is more than “ephemera”. And, of course and as always to Michael. (Awesome work on the color correction–those old Esquire pages can get a bit yellowed! Thanks for restoring them to the original crisp look–it makes a difference.)

Far from an authority on Rowland Wilson, I consider my self an enthusiastic fan-boy with a not so hidden agenda: to see a color book devoted to Rowland’s graphics, animation and art lessons published in my lifetime. Meanwhile, I add my gratitude to you, Michael, for a great display of his art. You did wizard work with your Photo Shop: that thick square back issue of Esquire (Dec. 1960) would NOT lie flat, and could not be broken on the rack of my photo scanner. Thank you.
