Kurtzman Kartoons

- Harvey Kurtzman offers a wealth of golden cartoons. Here’s a reprinted selection that Bill Peckmann forwarded to me; I think you’ll enjoy it. Bill wrote:

This book of Harvey Kurtzman reprints came out in 1976. They are of three “filler” features that HK did for comic books in the late ’40′s. These pre-date the work he did at EC Comics. You can see the early seeds of MAD comics that came a few years later.

His style is timeless, like that of Mary Blair or Bill Peet*. These could have been done yesterday. Love those animated poses. Fortunately he did do a new cover for the book when it came out. There’s also an intro by Robert Crumb.

I always felt lucky that Harvey Kurtzman was one of my teachers at SVA

I bought this back in the day. Have you seen the issue of Squa Tront which was a focus on Kurtzman’s work? It has a lot of thumbnail pages he did for a couple of projects. And its something artists should see in order to plan their work before committing it to large sized paper, or animation paper for that matter. Or digital, whatever medium you are working in. At anyrate, thanks for posting this.

This is just amazing! I can’t believe how good Kurtzman was. It suffers a bit from being on the net, which penalizes densely packed visuals. It’s true medium was the printed page, but even there it was sometimes printed too small.
