Weber & Schnerk Vote Toothpaste

Bill Peckmann shared these great LO sketches for one of Jack Schnerk‘s animation samples:

Since one of the first spots on Jack Schnerk‘s reel was his ‘Dragon’s MouthVote Toothpaste commercial, I thought you’d enjoy seeing New Yorker cartoonist Bob Weber‘s key LayOut drawings for the spot. Unfortunately they are not the full color original illustrations but black and white stats that were made to fit in a comfortable field size. These are for the first half of the spot.

These were the only keys that Jack had to guide him on this spot to work his animation magic. It was always a super treat to clean up Jack’s roughs, especially when he animated ‘named’ print cartoonists. The essence of the pose was always there in those terrific sketchy lines and the body proportions were also always bang on!

Bob Weber had a great sense of what to do in animation, his poses are beautiful. You only wish he would have been given more spots to design.

The following QT is the final commercial animated.

You can also go here and just watch the first spot to see a larger version.

Both Bob Weber and Jack Schnerk knocked it out of the park. The way the kid is posed in the second layout is a lovely bit of acting, and Schnerk handled the motion beautifully. They make the drawing and animation look so easy, though we know that it’s not.

Is this Bob Weber the same guy who does comic strip “Moose Miller”?

    Lovely commercial, regardless.

No Charles, this Bob Weber is not the “Moose Miller” comic strip cartoonist.
Side note – Bob “Moose Miller” Weber was a friend of Rowland Wilson’s, and back in the 1990′s, he introduced Rowland to the books of illustrator Keith Ward, Rowland became an instant fan of Ward’s, and with that and the help of the Splog, has turned a lot of us into Keith Ward fans! Thanks Bob!!!

I gotta admit the second key pose is a great choice for several reasons.

It is cool to see these and to know that they hired a gag cartoonist to do the layout (the board).

Actually, thanks for focusing on this particular commercial.

As for Bob “Moose Miller” Weber, doesn’t he have a cartoonist son named Bob Weber, Jr.? So, somehow, it is a popular name for cartoonists.
