What Do You Know About Disney?

- To add to the detritus filling the blogosphere, I’m going to post this brochure that was distributed during the Lincoln Center celebration of all things Disney. It took place back in 1972, and I guess this brochure helped to keep the would-be animators from charging the stage to show their wares to Ken Anderson, Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston or Woolie Reitherman, who were all there to promote Disney and Robin Hood.

There were a number of other handouts, and it was great to walk away with something, anything that had the Disney look.
Things were much more innocent back then. With such material it’s surprising that I stayed in New York instead of rushing to Hollywood. (I guess working for John Hubley, at the time, meant a lot more to me.)

This document may have appeared elsewhere, but I don’t remember it.

What a cool booklet. I know it was probably done fore economic reasons, but the use of only two colors makes it really classy. I have seen modern graphic design that does this on purpose. I guess we sometimes learn from limitations.

The Mickey Mouses on the cover are really nice. I like how they make him feel a bit more grown up and less boyish they other portrayals of him. The smug one in the bottom left corner is really funny. I like a well rounded mouse.

Wow, I am so glad you posted this. I inquired to Don Duckwall at Disney about what I needed to do to get into animation and this, along with other information is what he sent to me. I have mine somewhere but haven’t seen it in year. I actually had forgotten about it. This brochure helped me understand the animation process. Thanks again for posting it!

I, too, received this folder from Don Duckwall, back in 1977, together with a light grey CalArts folder. I always treasured them, and used them to focus my efforts in drawing and animation. I still shudder to think about the drawings I sent in at that time…

Oh, MAN ! That brings back memories . I’ve got one of those , too . Along with the color brochure that Steve Hulett posted over on The Animation Guild Blog .

I’m pretty sure that Mickey Mouse model sheet is a late one by Fred Moore.
