Hicks’ Hippo – Part 2

- Here are the remainder of the drawings from Hicks Lokey‘s Seq 10.4 Scene 26 from Fantasia. It represents the meeting between alligator and hippo from the Dance of the Hours section of the film. Jim Will did the effects animation in the scene.

Steven Hartley is posting a mosaic of this film on his blog, Blabbing On Arts and Culture!

Oh wow I just discovered the spacing of the Hippo is really close together when she lands the first time. Very graceful. The second time she lands, there is a big gap in the spacing just before impact. Very comical. It’s interesting to see the two ways of spacing the drawings and yet they are both funny and graceful at the same time. I’m also blown away with how much control there is with volumes and the clever use of perspective in particular her snout when she first lands towards the camera. Brilliant!!!!

The timing on this scene to the music is great. There’s a moving hold for a full beat on the extreme where he is holding her over his head, then they smash down along with a sharp accent in the music.

Yes, but I haven’t got very long to do. Just one more sequence to mosaic – really.
