FridayRecap: Wizard’s Inspiration

- John Canemaker has loaned me so many excellent pieces that I’m almost embarrassed at how quickly they’ve been eaten up by this blog. Many of them deserve as much attention as I can give.

Consequently, over the next few Fridays I’m going to re-post some of these gems. Let’s start with the wizard’s duel from Sword In The Stone. Here are some sketches Bill Peet did on yellow foolscap. I originally posted them in two days’ worth of blogging, since it took a while to scan them all.

Here they are condensed into one:

I love how Peet drew all over the cover (to the left) making his notes and sketches,
finally labelling the cover page. I think this is something we can all associate with, and
it helps to make the art less “Art” and more working drawings
to give the final film the life it has.

Johnston/Peet Bd

- I have an advanced board for the sequence in 101 Dalmatians wherein Pongo goes to the kitchen to comfort Perdita who’s worrying about Cruella’s threat to buy up all her pups.

This relates to Bill Peet‘s original board (posted here on April 1), but is composed of BG layouts and animation dwng cutouts. I’m posting the new board and juxtaposing it with the Peet original so you can see how it’s changed.

I also suggest you check out Mark Mayerson‘s invaluable Mosaics for this film and sequence.

This was Ollie Johnston‘s sequence, and he probably drew the dogs.
This is how the full LO board looks:

101 Dalamatians – Seq 3 Pt 2

- With this post, I’m completing the remainder of the storyboard material loaned to me by John Canemaker. This takes us through the birth of the puppies and the reemergence of Cruella De Ville in her attempt to buy them. The introductions are done, and the story is about to turn to action.

Here’s a breakdown of the board, posted slightly larger and mor legible. This final board also featured (albeit in B&W) some cel setups from the film. They’re posted larger, as well.

101 Dalamatians – Seq 3 Pt 1

- To continue with my presentation of the storyboard for 101 Dalmatians, I have two more photos of the Bill Peet boards loaned me by John Canemaker. As with other similar posts, I’ve broken them up so that I can post them as large as possible. Below is the photo of this board as is.

I’ve broken it down by line of drawings and split that into two.

101 Dalmatians – seq. 2 pt. 1

- The four artists pictured above were shot during a boisterous story meeting. Or more probably it’s a posed photo. It’s interesting that they pose a picture where the irrascible Bill Peet seems to be taking on the designer and directors of the film.

Left to right, that’s Woolie Reitherman, Bill Peet, Ken Andersen and Ham Luske.

This is the first of the storyboards loaned to me by John Canemaker. It’s the second sequence in 101 Dalmatians. The sequence starts with the wedding of Roger and Anita, Pongo and Perdita and takes us through the introduction of Cruella de Ville to pregnant Perdita worrying about the fate of her pups in the kitchen.

This board takes us more than half way through the sequence. The second board, which I’ll post tomorrow or Wednesday (it takes a while to scan and post these), takes us through the end of the sequence.

Hans Perk is posting the complete production drafts of this film, and Mark Mayerson has started creating a mosaic from the drafts Hans is posting. The information they’re both offering is invaluable.

As with past boards, I’ve split them up so that I can post the largest possible image. Otherwise they’d be the size of the full board, above.

Last of Susie

- In the past two weeks I’ve posted a number of boards and preliminary artwork for Susie the Little Blue Coupe, the 1952 Disney short. Bill Peet did all of the storyboard drawings posted last week, and he did a storybook prep for the film posted the week before.

All of this material came to me via a generous loan from John Canemaker.

Here’s the final board in the series. It seems to be LO drawings and doesn’t appear to be part of the storyboard. Perhaps it was prepared for a Leica reel? Regardless, the drawings are interesting, though I doubt Bill Peet did them all.

Finally, I wanted to give an indication of the film’s color, so I’ve gone back to John Canemaker’s book The Art and Flair of Mary Blair and have poached this color sketch she did in styling the film.

Susie Board 2

Here is the remaining half of Bill Peet‘s storyboard for Susie, the Little Blue Coup.
Many thanks to John Canemaker for the loan of this board.

As usual, this is the composite of the storyboard panel represented here.
I’ve split it up and present it in a larger form.

Susie Board 1

- Last week, I posted the galleys for Bill Peet ‘s book art for Susie, the Little Blue Coupe. I can’t say for sure that it ever became a book, but I do know it was a film completed in 1951.
..The film was directed by Clyde Geronomi.
..The Layout was by Don Griffith and
…______________________Hugh Hennesy.
..The animation was by Bob Carlson, Ollie
._.Johnston
, Hal King and Cliff Nordberg.
..The backgrounds were by Ralph Hulett.
..The music was composed by Paul Smith.

Thanks again to John Canemaker, I have the storyboard by Peet for this short Disney film. Part 1 appears here.

As in the past I’ve broken the board down so that I could post it as large as possible so that you can read it when the images are enlarged. Enjoy.

Last Little House – 5

– Following up yesterday’s posting, here’s the last of the phographed storyboards loaned to me by John Canemaker. It was a board done by Bill Peet and Bill Cottrell. Since Cottrell, Disney’s brother-in-law, didn’t draw, he undoubtedly did a script adaptation from the Virginia Lee Burton book.

Don’t forget to look at John Canemaker ‘s book The Art and Flair of Mary Blair. This book goes well into the design of this film with lots of illustrations.

Here are links to the other 4 parts of this
Little House storyboard fiesta:

This is the 5th photo of the storyboard as it stands. To allow you to see the images larger, I’ve split the board up into sections.

Peet’s Little House – 4

- As I noted, when I first started posting these storyboards by Bill Peet, which were loaned to me by John Canemaker, there are a total of five oversized photographs. I’ve displayed and broken down three of them in the past weeks.

This is the fourth, and possibly the largest of the boards. It seems to be a reworking of the entire film. There may be a bit of repetition from other boards.

The fifth, and final, board is the conclusion of this version. I’ll try to post it tomorrow. (It takes a lot of time to break it down so that you can see the images slightly larger.)

This is the full storyboard. You’ll see below that I’ve broken up so that it enlarges a bit more than this original.
